In un Medioevo spietato e feroce per sopravvivere è necessaria l'astuzia: questa, infatti, sembra essere l'unica, ma dall'inesorabile efficacia, arma di Bertoldo, contadino povero e dalle forme mostruose. Condannato a morte, riesce ad ottenere dai suoi carnefici, come ultimo desiderio, il diritto a scegliere lui, l'albero al quale farsi impiccare... sarà questo, un vegetale dai primi germogli di vita, irto dal suolo appena due spanne!
